Questions people ask
- Why is most of the early payment interest?
- Interest is charged on the balance you still owe. The balance is highest at the start, so more of each payment goes to interest early on.
- Do extra payments really help?
- Extra money that goes to principal lowers the balance sooner, so you pay less interest and finish earlier. Check with your servicer that extra payments go to principal and that there is no prepayment penalty.
- Does this include taxes and insurance?
- No. It shows principal and interest only. Use the mortgage payment calculator for the full monthly cost.
